Diamond drop grinding
As the name suggests, a drop-cut diamond has the shape of a drop. This form of grinding combines the characteristics of a round brilliant and marquise grinding. Drop grinding is also called pear grinding and on the other hand it has been described as resembling a tear. A drop-cut diamond is not as common a choice in a ring as it is in, for example, earrings and pendants, where its shape can be better displayed, but it gives an even rarer and more original result in, for example, engagement and wedding rings.
The symmetry of the rim of a drop-cut diamond
Most forms of diamond cut have optimal proportions that best bring out the brilliance and fire of the diamond. For drop-cut diamonds, good proportions are, for example, 1:1.5 and 1:1.75. However, in a drop-cut diamond, the symmetry of the drop's circumference is more important than the proportions. The human eye notices even a small asymmetry, because we are used to seeing this shape as symmetrical in, for example, water drops.
The cut of a diamond is the most important factor in determining the price of a diamond, because it has the greatest influence on the beauty of the diamond and its brilliance. Other factors include the weight, color and clarity of the diamond. The four factors that influence the value of a diamond are internationally called the 4Cs, i.e. cut (cut), Carat (weight), color (color) and clarity (purity). Of all four factors, grinding is technically the most difficult to analyze. Once a diamond has been successfully cut, the diamond's dimensions, facets and reference sets work to create a perfect interaction with light. Diamond grinding requires the right proportions, so that the light directed at it is reflected back through the largest bevel at the top of the stone, i.e. the face of the diamond. The lower part of the stone cannot be too deep or shallow, but just the right length so that the stone looks bright and lively.
