What is a Student's Lyre or a Mother's Lyre?

Student's lyre or mothers lyre is traditionally a gift given by a secondary school graduate to his mother just before the ceremony in Finland, as thanks to his mother for upbringing and care. A mother who received a lyre can use the lyre not only for her own child's graduate party, but also when visiting other people's graduate parties or other important family celebrations. Usually, the mother has one Lyre for each graduated child, all of those are usually held at the breast at the same time. The mother's lyre is attached to the left, i.e. to the side of the heart, while ordinary brooches are worn to the right.

The Lyre Tradition is Renewed

In the traditional sense, the student lyre is a yellow gold brooch. Today, however, the lyre tradition has taken on new forms and lyre brooches are also made of white gold and silver. In addition, lyre decorations have been seen, for example, in earrings. The student lyre was originally given only to the mother, but nowadays there are, for example, father's lyres visible on tie pins and a smaller grandmother's lyre. For this reason, mother's lyre or high school lyre is also known as parent's lyre. In Laatukoru's selection, you can find traditional yellow-gold lyre brooches in single and two-piece versions. The diameter of the Lyra available from us is 16 mm, i.e. according to the official dimensions. The lyre is made of 14 carat yellow gold. The traditional yellow-gold Lyra will always remain fashionable.

Mother's lyre is related to a time when it was rare to enroll as a high school student and high school students came from wealthy families. At that time, graduating as a high school student was such a source of pride that high school students wore a high school cap throughout the summer. Even though today graduating high school is everyone's right, in families, especially the graduation of the first high school student is still a matter of great pride and the lyre is carried with pride. According to tradition, a high school student buys a Lyra for their parent, but in some cases mothers buy a Lyra themselves because they believe their children will forget.

Two-Part Student Lyre

According to tradition, a mother receives one Lyra for each of her children who have graduated from secondary school. When more than one lyre had accumulated, it was customary to solder them together in a row. In our online store, you can find not only a single yellow-gold Lyra, but also a two-part Lyra brooch. This is appropriate for a mother whose children are graduating secondary school at the same time, or in situations where a child who previously graduated from secondary school has forgotten to buy Lyyra for his mother. The two-piece Lyra is also completely traditional, with it being yellow gold and two Lyra attached to each other.
